4 Podcasts To Help You Understand How Modern PR Works

1. #FuturePRoof Podcast

The podcast, led by Sarah Waddington and Stephen Waddington directly from the United Kingdom, is a whole community, with 4 editions of the book #FuturePRoof, a blog, and now a project aimed at helping PR workers who may lose their jobs due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. It discusses current industry changes, how modern PR differs from marketing, and why it remains one of the most important strategic management tools.

If you are interested in the PR industry:

They discuss important events in the industry: including festivals, important public statements, and statistics. They also discuss specific PR-cases — there is a lot to learn.

If you are not:

The podcast often raises topics that are related to current events: how different areas, including PR and marketing, suffer from the Covid-19, how modern social networks work, how to fight against misinformation, whether PR is an area where inclusion is welcome, as well as various social and political issues (most often related to intra-British events).

2. The Spins Sucks Podcast

Gini Dietrich, the host of this podcast, and the founder and CEO of Spin Sucks has a slightly different approach to PR than her colleagues at #FutureProof. If in today’s world the boundaries between the PR industry, marketing, search, social networks, and advertising are blurred, then why not combine all this and change the PR industry, she believes. She is also the author of a book on communication and reputation management in the digital age.

If you are interested in the PR industry:

For the most part, the short editions of the podcast (about 8–15 minutes), provide answers to practical questions: effective storing for the brand, how to build an online community, what mistakes to avoid in PR and what tools to use.

If you are not:

The advice that Gini gives is excellent not only for professionals, but also for those who want to develop their own brand, so if you own a business or want to start a business — listen to this podcast, it can be very useful for you.

For Immediate Release

The FIR is a whole Network of podcasts united by the themes of PR, communications, and marketing. Each of their podcasts is very interesting, but I especially recommend these 2 podcasts about PR.

3. Young PR Pros

The Youg PR Pros is a podcast by Kristine D’Arbelles, Julia Kent, Ross Simmonds, and Clare Bonnyman. As stated in the title, it focuses on those who are just beginning their careers in the PR industry. So, despite the fact that the episodes are not short, they are easy to listen to, and the presenters demonstrate a non-standard approach to work in the industry.

If you are interested in the PR industry:

It discusses important issues for anyone who is just starting their career: how to create a portfolio and what difficulties you may face in the first 30 days at a new job. The presenters also discuss issues that may not have occurred to professionals of “old school”, such as how to refuse a toxic client.

If you are not:

Since the podcast is a fresh look at the industry, many topics that are raised here are relevant not only for PR, for example, how to combat gender inequality and fake news. And many career advice, which gives by hosts, is useful not only for those who work in the PR industry but also for any young professionals starting their careers.

4. Inside PR

Inside PR podcast with co-hosts Gini Dietrich, Joseph Thornley, and Martin Waxman is released weekly, and here they discuss PR at the intersection with business and technology. Despite the fact that the episodes here are quite small, the hosts have time to discuss both practical advice and socially important issues.

If you are interested in the PR industry:

It also raises very practical questions — what to do if the client stops answering your calls? — But they also talk about global changes in public relations and communications: how Google and Facebook policy is changing and how businesses can adapt to it. The podcast really gives a lot of advice from real industry professionals.

If you are not:

The issues that are discussed in terms of PR in this podcast actually concern you, even if you have never been interested in the industry or own your own business. The hosts are discussing how the concept of privacy is changing, how advertising affects elections, how social networks are changing our lives, and whether it’s for the best — in general, even if you’ve never thought about these issues, it will be interesting to hear about it.
